Mantegna-Bellini: A talk with Caroline Campbell and Giovanni Carlo Federico Villa

“A story of art, family, rivalry, and personality”

Join us to witness a talk between two of the most respected curators and expert of Andrea Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini.

The decade-long dialogue between Andrea Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini has been one of the most profitable and fascinating in the history of Italian art. The two brothers-in-law develop an artistic language with some similarities but also profound differences which significantly influences the centuries to follow. The conference will illustrate this great story in a narrative woven on the images and details of their masterpieces and will explore some of the new discoveries and related research projects.

Caroline Campbell is the Director of Collections and Research, and Curator of Italian Paintings before 1500 at the National Gallery. Earlier in her career, Caroline held curatorial positions at The Courtauld Gallery, London, the National Gallery and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Caroline has curated and co-curated many exhibitions, including Bellini and the East (2005-06), Love and Marriage in Renaissance Florence (2009); Building the Picture: Architecture in Italian Renaissance Painting (2014) and Duccio/Caro: In Dialogue (2015). In 2018 she curated the Mantegna and Bellini exhibition that opened at the National Gallery.

Giovanni Carlo Federico Villa is Associate Professor of Modern Art History at the University of Bergamo and Honorary Director of the Civic Museums of Vicenza and “Conservatoria Civici Monumenti”. He curated for the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, the exhibitions Antonello da Messina (2006), Giovanni Bellini (2008), Lorenzo Lotto (2011), Tintoretto (2012) and Tiziano (2013), as well as numerous exhibition projects in Italy and internationally for some of the most important museums in Paris, Brussels, Moscow, St.Petersburg, Tokyo and Zagreb. He is the author of over two hundred scientific publications – including some monographs translated into seven languages ​​(Chinese, Croatian, Flemish, French, Japanese, English, Russian). He also has an intense lecturing activity.
