Natura Morta and other works by Paul Coldwell

Natura Morta and other works by Paul Coldwell

12 April – 31 May 2023
Free entrance:
Monday to Friday, 10am – 5pm (Last entry: 4.30pm)

A selection of prints by Paul Coldwell that explore the genre of still life, including a recent portfolio of etchings entitled The Studio, made during lockdown from small models assembled in his studio. The prints begin as playful constructions and evolve through manipulation in the computer before being realised as multiple blocks woodcuts with each block laser cut and hand printed by the artist.

Coldwell’s work, which includes printmaking sculpture, installation, film and writing, explores issues around absence and loss, with ideas crossing between media.

Throughout his career he has acknowledged the profound influence of the Italian artist Giorgio Morandi, in particular for his still lives and etchings. Like Morandi, Coldwell’s work is focused on objects, the everyday items which accompany our daily lives but that have little financial value. Through this, the intention is to focus on incidental events and relationships and propose an alternative value. Biography link
