Within the frame of the Open City Documentary Festival, Expanded Realities showcases innovative works of non-fiction made outside of conventional filmmaking technologies. This year’s programme includes formats such as VR, video games, interactive films, and audio.
ICI London is pleased to support Montegelato by Davide Rapp. In central Italy, Montegelato waterfalls have been used as a filming location for decades, with the site playing host to scenes ranging from youthful romantic hideaways to Western standoffs. Taking clips from hundreds of films, Rapp creates a spatial montage where genres and histories are layered one over another. The resulting spectral model is a palimpsest of the location across a collective cinematic imagination, serving as an ode to the human need for storytelling.
This exhibition is free to attend and is based at Festival Hub (32A Gerrard St, London W1D 6JA).

Davide Rapp is an Italian video-artist working across the fields of art, design, and cinema to produce mixed-media installations, movie montages, and video essays. In 2014, he participated at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition – Fundamentals (Venice Biennale) with “Elements”, a 32-minute montage film describing the fundamental elements of architecture through over 500 film clips. In 2021, his work Montegelato competed at the 78th edition of Mostra Internazionale di Arte Cinematografica Biennale di Venezia. Rapp is the founder and creative director of the Milan-based creative agency -orama.
Open City Documentary Festival creates an open space in London to nurture and champion the art of non-fiction cinema. Based at the UCL Anthropology’s Section for Public Anthropology, they deliver training programmes, an annual documentary festival, the bi-annual Non-Fiction journal, and events that aim to challenge and expand the idea of documentary in all its forms.
