Lion Television and ICI London with the Director of Pompeii Dr Gabriel Zuchtriegel are delighted to present a special screening of
Pompeii: The New Dig
a new three-part series for BBC Two which offers a fascinating insight into the most extensive archaeological excavation in the ancient city of Pompeii for a generation.
With unique access to the dig, the cameras follow an all-Italian team of archaeologists as they excavate an entire city block in the north of the city uncovering new buildings and the incredible stories of the people who lived there and what happened to them during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
Discoveries emerging from the pumice include the skeletons of three victims, a bakery, laundry, and remarkable frescoes including one of a so-called ‘pizza’, tools and tiles, evidence of an ancient building site, remarkable reliefs of snakes above a shrine. The series also charts the search for evidence of survivors of the disaster. Told through the drama of the dig and stylised fresco-inspired animations, Pompeii: The New Dig is a unique record of a remarkable excavation and paints a vivid picture of what life was like in Pompeii at the moment of the eruption.
