A profound exploration of the multifaceted literary legacy of Patrizia Cavalli. From the pages of “Le mie poesie non cambieranno il mondo” (Einaudi, 1974) to the evocative verses of “Vita meravigliosa” (Einaudi, 2020). Cavalli’s poetry stands as an infinite ode to the subjective and polymorphic nature of reality, skilfully laced with humour and lightness as powerful poetic instruments. Despite being often overlooked within Italian scholarly circles, categorized as ‘stili semplici’ (Scarpa, 2004), or unfairly relegated to the label of ‘spontaneismo’ (Afribo, 2017), Cavalli’s work has achieved vibrant success on the international stage. Notably, her collected poems have been collaboratively translated by Gini Alhadeff and published by Penguin in 2018.

This conference offers a unique platform for scholars and enthusiasts alike to delve into the uncharted depths of Patrizia Cavalli’s literary production. The relevance of theatre in Cavalli’s works adds a dynamic layer to our exploration. Cavalli, much like the structure of classical theatre, invites us to consider what likes in front and behind the various stages of her production. In her poetic dramas, the interplay of humour and lightness serves as a theatrical backdrop, creating a nuanced dialogue between the visible and the concealed. As we navigate the stages of Cavalli’s artistic journey, our conference adopts the structure of the classical theatre – the cavea, where scholars illuminate the overarching themes; the orchestra, where the nuances of form and style come to life; the proscenio, offering insights into the contextual backdrop; and the scena, where the poetic essence unfolds. Join us in unravelling the intricate threads of Patrizia Cavalli’s literary tapestry, where every act in each panel holds significance in the grand theatre of her creativity.
